Our Spiritual Journey
The journey of faith is a common theme throughout Scripture, and it's evident in the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These Psalms were sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem for the annual feasts, and they capture the essence of the Christian's journey through life. Just as the pilgrims journeyed together to worship God, Christians today are on a similar journey with fellow believers, gathering in churches to praise and honour Him.

In Psalm 120, the psalmist is surrounded by people who don't care about God or His ways, and in Psalm 121, he learns to trust in God's providence and care. Finally, in Psalm 122, the psalmist arrives in Jerusalem, rejoicing with those who said, "Let us go to the house of the Lord."
The Christian's journey parallels this pattern, starting with feeling distant from God, learning to trust Him, and then celebrating the joy of being with fellow believers in church.
The Importance of Gathering for Worship:
Gathering with fellow believers for worship should be a high priority for Christians. Psalm 122 teaches us that it should not only be our duty but also our delight. As we journey with people of like faith, it's crucial to remember that our goal is not to create the perfect church or force others to conform to our way of thinking. Each congregation is made up of flawed individuals who need grace. The first-century church was far from perfect, but God used it to transform the world. The goal is to help each other reach our destination, not trip each other up, while allowing each member to contribute their unique perspectives and gifts to the congregation. Those who bring a fresh enthusiasm for the journey can be a great help to those who have grown weary.
Praying for God's People:
Psalm 122 encourages us to pray for God's people regularly, which will have a tremendous effect on our prayer life throughout the week. We should pray for the peace of Jerusalem, our churches, and our brothers and sisters in Christ (Psalm 122:6-9). Praying for one another is an essential part of our journey together.
The Role of Jesus and Breaking Bread:
The journey of faith ultimately leads us to Jesus, who is at the heart of Christian worship and fellowship. As we gather with fellow believers, we remember His sacrificial death and resurrection through the breaking of bread. The Lord's Supper serves as a reminder of the new covenant we have with God through Jesus, who is the true source of peace and unity in the church. Participating in communion together strengthens our bonds with each other and with Christ, as we remember His love and sacrifice for us.
The Search for a Church that Honours God's Truths:
When searching for a church to join in our journey of faith, it's important to focus on finding a church that honours God's truths as expressed in the Bible, rather than seeking the "perfect" church. We should look for a church that adheres to essential beliefs about God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, humanity, and salvation. While no church is perfect, being part of a congregation that upholds biblical principles is vital for our spiritual growth and well-being.
The Psalms of Ascent serve as a beautiful reminder of the Christian's journey through life, paralleling the ups and downs we face as we walk with God. As we journey together with people of like faith, gathering for worship and praying for one another, we grow closer to God and each other. The breaking of bread unites us with Christ, who is at the center of our faith and our journey.
